I began my running career in 6th grade in Warwick, NY. In my high school years, I ran distances from 600m up through 10Km. After high school, I ran cross-country and track at Virginia Tech, where I set a still-standing Freshman school record at 10,000 Meters of 30:06 and was a scoring member of the 1987
4th-Place NCAA Cross Country team. Upon graduating, I began training for road races and eventually moved up to the marathon distance.
In 1993, I got my first opportunity to represent the United States as a member of the U.S. Track and Field Team at the World University Games in Buffalo, New York, where I finished 8th in the marathon in a PR 2:19:36. In 1996 I finished 21st at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Charlotte, NC in a PR 2:19:08.
I entered the world of ultrarunning in 1998 by winning the Rattlesnake 50Km in Charleston, West Virginia, where I set a new course record. My next ultra was the JFK 50 Mile, where I finished 1st-Place overall. My performance at JFK earned me a spot on the 1999 U.S. Track and Field Team for the IAU World Cup 100Km. Earning a chance to once again represent the U.S. was a dream come true, and I have never looked back since.
In 2000, I won the
USATF 100Km National Championship.
Over the course of my ultrarunning career. I have been selected to
10 consecutive U.S. National 100 Kilometer Teams ('99-'08) for the IAU World 100Km Championship (I declined my USATF Team spot in 2004 to compete for the American Ultrarunning Association at the same event). I finished
5th-Place Overall in 2006 at the
IAU World 100Km Championship event and most recently 8th-Place Overall in 2007 in Winschoten, the Netherlands. I have finished as top American the past 6 years.
In addition to my career as an athlete, I have also served as a coach to numerous distance athletes throughout my running career. My philosophy as a coach is to provide guidance and training programs that cover all-aspects of being a great athlete.
I believe in success through science, hard-work, and dedication. I believe in promoting the sport of running in a positive manner to anyone who is willing to put forth the effort and enthusiasm to be the best that he/she can be.
